Volvo V60 Wagon to Come to US

For many people, Swedish carmaker Volvo is synonymous with boxy station wagons.  However, they haven't sold a true wagon in the U.S. since 2010. That will change in 2014 when Volvo brings the V60 wagon stateside. The V60 R-design, a sporty trim of the V60 wagon, debuted at the New York International Auto Show.
"This is a redesigned version of the V60 that has been sold in Europe for about three years," writes the Detroit Free Press, adding that the V60 "will offer a choice of three engines. Volvo did not disclose pricing or fuel economy figures." Likely disappointing automotive journalists, who all seem to long for diesel wagons with manual transmissions despite the fact that consumers tend to want the exact opposite, a Volvo marketing executive told the Free Press that there are no plans for a diesel version of the V60.
"The currently available S60 holds up well against German competitors like the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 sedans, and the V60 will pull Volvo's U.S. offerings even closer to its German rivals with its own wagon counterpart — both 3 Series and A4 lineups have wagon variants," writes Cars.com
"What took Volvo so long to bring the V60 wagon to the United States?" asks The New York Times. "In Europe, wagons are often considered to be more prestigious than their sedan counterparts. That is not so stateside, where station wagons still carry a suburban stigma of PTA meetings and chewing gum stuck to the seats."
Volvo may be acknowledging the reality of that perception, as the Free Press reports that the company only expects to sell roughly 5,000 of the V60 wagons per year in the U.S.
