Ford to Offer Free MPG Boost to 2013 Hybrid Owners

Ford will begin offering a free software update in August to improve the fuel economy of the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid, 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid and 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid.
Ford says the software update will improve its hybrids’ real-world fuel economy. “We believe these actions will provide our customers enhanced on-road fuel economy satisfaction,” says Raj Nair, group vice president of global product development at Ford, in a press release.
According to Ford, the software update will increase the electric-only top speed from 62 to 85 mph, reduce engine warm-up time, decrease aerodynamic drag using Ford’s active grille shutters, reduce engine cooling fan speed and optimize the climate control system.
“Customers should see the most improvement at highway speeds, during air conditioner use and operation in colder climates,” says Nair. He expects the mileage improvements to vary based on the way people drive. “Just as individual mileage can vary based on driving styles and environmental conditions,” he says, “we expect fuel economy improvements will differ from customer to customer depending on individual driving habits.”
Ford’s announcement Tuesday comes amid criticism that the company has inflated the fuel economy numbers of hybrids like the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid. Reuters reports that “Ford faces a number of class action lawsuits that claim the No. 2 U.S. automaker overstated the gas mileage on its hybrids.”
According to Business Insider, one plaintiff, who owns a C-Max Hybrid, averaged aproximately 37 mpg in combined driving, which is less than the EPA's 47 mpg combined estimate.
Consumer Reports tested the car last year and also reported 37 mpg combined.
Like other automakers, Ford uses the EPA's fuel economy estimates in its advertising. Organizations such as Consumer Reports have recently questioned the EPA’s testing methods, saying that the EPA’s tests don’t reflect real world driving and can result in inflated fuel economy numbers, especially for hybrids. The EPA last addressed concerns about its fuel economy tests in 2008, when it changed its methods to better reflect real world driving. It included faster acceleration, air conditioner use and colder outside temperatures in its tests, and average fuel economy numbers dropped.
Autoweek reports that the software updates should take a half day, and that Ford encourages 2013 hybrid owners to make an appointment with their dealer.

Chrysler Recalls More Than 50,000 Jeep and Ram Models

Chrysler Group is recalling 45,961 Ram 1500 trucks in the U.S. due to a software issue that can disable the Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The recall affects 2013 model-year trucks with four-wheel drive. ESC systems use sensors to detect when a vehicle is losing control, and then helps the driver maintain control by applying the brakes to certain wheels to keep the car moving along its intended path. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “A disabled ESC system may result in loss of directional control, increasing the risk of a crash.”
Affected owners should hear from Chrysler in August and dealers will update the ESC software for free. If you have any questions about the recall, you can call Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753 and mention recall campaign number N37.
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees with LED headlamps have been recalled. (Chrysler Group)
Chrysler is also recalling 4,458 Jeep Grand Cherokee models for a problem with the vehicle’s parking lamps. NHTSA says that the recall affects 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited, Overland and Summit models that are equipped with premium headlamps and LED daytime running lights. When the driver turns the parking lights on, a software glitch immediately turns them off again. This can result in reduced visibility, which increases the risk of a crash. Without parking lamps, the vehicle also fails to conform to federal safety standards, according to NHTSA.
The fix involves a software update, which dealers will do free of charge. Chrysler will start contacting owners of affected vehicles in August. If you have any questions for Chrysler, you can contact them at 1-800-247-9753 and mention recall campaign number N42.

Ram 1500 Picks Up Top Rating from Consumer Reports

Chrysler Group has something to celebrate as Consumer Reports has named the 2013 Ram 1500 its top full-size pickup truck. Explaining the top rating, Consumer Reports writes, "The updated truck delivered impressive performance in our tests, balancing work capability and refinement in a way that sees it outscore established domestic- and foreign-nameplate competitors."
This isn't the first award the 2013 Ram 1500 has won. It's the most recent winner of the North American Truck of the Year award. The 2013 model has some significant updates, including a more luxurious interior, better fuel economy and tweaks to the suspension to improve the truck's ride. The Ram 1500 is the only full-size pickup truck in the U.S. that uses a coil spring suspension. Reviewers like how the setup makes the Ram 1500 less bouncy and more comfortable than other full-size pickups.
The Wall Street Journal reports, "The top ranking from Consumer Reports is yet another vote of confidence at a time when Chrysler is trying to gain ground against competitors General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. Already, the Ram brand has managed to pick up market share from rivals. Ram sales in the first half of this year were up 23%, according to AutoData Corp."
While it seems to be all good news for the Ram 1500, USA Today writes that the truck can't afford to rest on its laurels. The paper points out that Consumer Reports hasn't finished testing the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, which is all new. Consumer Reports says, "First impressions are that the Silverado is a comfortable and refined truck that could possibly challenge the Ram in our Ratings."

Toyota RAV4 Fares Poorly in IIHS Small Overlap Crash Test

Even with extra time to prepare, the 2013 Toyota RAV4 didn't do well in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s small overlap frontal crash test. In a press release, the IIHS says they initially delayed crash testing the RAV4 to allow Toyota to enhance the vehicle’s safety structure.
According to the IIHS, the changes made were not sufficient, and the RAV4 earned a score of Poor in the new safety test. The agency reports that “the driver's space was seriously compromised by intruding structure, and the dummy's left foot was trapped by crushed and buckled sheet metal in the footwell.” Additionally, “the dummy's head barely contacted the frontal airbag before sliding off the left side as the steering column moved more than 7 inches to the right, resulting in little airbag cushioning for the chest.” Finally, the agency reports that excessive movement allowed by the safety belt resulted in the dummy’s head hitting the dashboard.
The small overlap frontal crash test is IIHS’ newest safety test. It is designed to evaluate a vehicle’s ability to protect its occupants in a collision where the front corner of the vehicle hits an object like a pole or another car.

Failure to earn a score of Good in the small overlap frontal crash test means the 2013 RAV4 does not earn the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus status. Still, the RAV4 is designated a Top Safety Pick for its scores of Good in all of the other IIHS safety tests.
The New York Times corresponded with Toyota via email, and they report that the automaker says it is “looking at a range of solutions to achieve greater crash performance in this area.”
The only two compact SUVs that have been earned the Top Safety Pick Plus designation so far are the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and redesigned 2014 Subaru Forester.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Officially Rated at 29 MPG Highway

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (General Motors)
The EPA has officially rated the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray at 17/29 mpg city/highway, which works out to 21 mpg combined when equipped with a seven-speed manual transmission. The new Corvette has better fuel economy estimates than the 2013 model, which earned 16/26 mpg city/highway and a combined rating of 19 mpg.
General Motors says in a press release that the 2014 Corvette gets 28 mpg on the highway in its normal Tour drive mode, while 30 mpg can be achieved on the highway by switching to the Corvette’s Eco drive mode. Selecting Eco mode engages the Corvette’s Active Fuel Management system, “which disables four of the cylinders for improved fuel economy during light engine loads.” Fuel economy estimates for models with the six-speed automatic transmission have not been released yet, but GM says that Corvettes with automatic transmissions use Active Fuel Management at all times, unless the driver uses the steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters to put the Corvette in manual mode.
GM says that the Stingray’s fuel economy rating makes it “the most fuel efficient sports car on the market as no other car offers more than 455 horsepower and greater than 29 mpg highway.” In comparison, less powerful cars like the Ford Mustang GT and BMW M3 earn 18/25 and 14/20 mpg, respectively, while the more powerful Nissan GT-R gets 16/23 mpg. The 400-horsepower Porsche 911 Carrera S gets 19/27 mpg city/highway. While the 911 Carrera S earns two mpg less on the highway, it does earn a slightly higher combined fuel economy estimate at 22 mpg.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray will go on sale this fall, while convertible models will hit dealer lots by the end of 2013. After a $995 destination charge, the Corvette Stingray will start at $51,995 and $56,995 for coupe and convertible models, respectively.

Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Promises Best-in-Class Fuel Economy

(Chrysler Group)
Diesel engine options have long been a mainstay for heavy-duty pickup trucks, but until now, diesel power has never been offered in the half-ton truck segment. That changes with the 2014 Ram 1500. Chrysler Group announced last week details for the EcoDiesel engine option for the Ram 1500.
Chrysler Group hasn’t given any specific fuel economy estimates yet, but it expects the Ram 1500 with the EcoDiesel to be more fuel-efficient than any gasoline V6-powered half-ton pickup truck available. The most fuel-efficient non-hybrid full-size pickup truck currently on the market is the Ram 1500 equipped with the 3.6-liter V6 and eight-speed automatic, which is rated at an EPA-estimated 17/25 mpg city/highway. With the diesel engine, Pickuptrucks.com predicts that fuel economy estimates will be about 23 mpg city and less than 30 mpg highway.
Chrysler Group says the EcoDiesel engine option is a 3.0-liter V6 rated at 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, which is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine is also available on the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV.
Autoblog expects an EcoDiesel-powered Ram 1500 to be able to tow as much as a Hemi V8-powered model, “while returning significantly better fuel mileage.” A Hemi-equipped Ram 1500 can tow up to 10,450 pounds.
With the projections for towing capacity and fuel economy, an EcoDiesel Ram 1500 should be able to match the towing capacity of the strongest Ram 1500 and meet, if not exceed, the fuel economy estimates of the gasoline V6-powered Ram 1500. Given the added cost of diesel fuel over gasoline, owners may not save much money at the pump, but the increased fuel economy should allow for more miles between refueling stops. Given a 26-gallon fuel tank and estimating 29 mpg highway, a diesel-powered Ram 1500 could travel more than 750 miles on a full tank. Using the same tank size with the gasoline V6’s 25 mpg highway estimate, the maximum range of that Ram 1500 would be about 650 miles.
The new diesel engine option costs $2,850 more than a similarly-equipped Hemi V8-powered model, according to Chrysler Group. Given this pricing information, Car and Driver expects that a diesel-powered Ram 1500 will likely start at about $30,000.
Chrysler Group says the base 2014 Ram 1500 will start at $24,200 before destination. A Ram Truck representative said it will hit dealerships late this year or early in 2014.

Redesigned 2014 BMW X5 Gets Pricier

(BMW of North America)

BMW announced this week that the redesigned 2014 X5 SUV will start at $53,725, including destination, which represents an increase of $5,300 over the 2013 model.
For 2014, BMW adds a new base model, the sDrive35i, which is the first rear-wheel drive X5 BMW has offered. Other models, all of which have all-wheel drive, include the xDrive35i, which starts at $56,025, xDrive35d (diesel), which starts at $57,525, and xDrive50i, which starts at $69,125.
According to USA Today, “BMW says straight price comparisons aren't fair,” given the 2014 model’s increased size, lower curb weight and added standard equipment over the 2013 model. When looking at the prices of rivals in its class, the new X5 is still more expensive. The Mercedes-Benz M-Class starts at $48,175, the Acura MDX starts at $43,185 and the Porsche Cayenne starts at $50,575, all including destination.
2014 BMW X5
(BMW of North America)
For 2014, the 35i models are powered by BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, rated at 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. This engine carries over unchanged from 2013. The 35d features a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo diesel engine that makes 255 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, which is a loss of 10 horsepower and 12 pound-feet of torque over the 2013 model. The 50i has a 4.4-liter V8 rated at 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, which is an increase of 45 horsepower and 30 pound-feet of torque over the 2013 model’s V8 option. All X5 models have an eight-speed automatic transmission. The EPA has yet to publish fuel economy information for the 2014 X5, but for reference, the 2013 xDrive35i is rated at 16/23 mpg city/highway, the diesel xDrive35d at 19/26 mpg and the xDrive50i at 14/20 mpg.
BMW says the 2014 X5 comes with more standard equipment, including an engine start-stop feature, iDrive navigation with a touchpad and a 10.2-inch display and a 40/20/40 split-folding second-row seat. A two-passenger third-row seat is optional. BMW offers a few trim lines for each model that add features and equipment to the X5. These trims include the Luxury Line, xLine and M Sport.
To Car and Driver, the new X5 appears “a little chunkier” than the 2013 model, but points out that BMW claims to have reduced the new model’s curb weight by about 170 to 230 pounds.
The gas-powered 35i and 50i models will hit showrooms in the fourth quarter of this year, while the diesel model will arrive in early 2014.

2014 Cadillac XTS to Get Twin-Turbo V6

2014 Cadillac XTS (General Motors)
If you have a lead foot and a need for speed, the 2014 Cadillac XTS Vsport has you covered with a new twin-turbo V6 engine option that punches out 410 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. This is a big increase over the 2013 XTS’ base V6 engine, which carries over for 2014, that produces 304 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque, though not as powerful as the 556-horspower supercharged V8 found in the smaller Cadillac CTS-V.
Still, some auto writers say that the XTS Vsport should be significantly quicker than the base XTS. “That kind of power boost should make for quite an improvement in the all-wheel-drive XTS’s 0–60 time, which we’ve clocked at 7.2 seconds,” Car and Driver reports.
2014 Cadillac XTS Platinum
2014 Cadillac XTS Platinum (General Motors)
The redesigned 2014 CTS will also offer this new twin-turbo V6 as an option, though it will make 10 more horsepower than the twin-turbo-equipped XTS. Hampden Tener, Cadillac product director, said in an interview at the 2013 New York Auto Show that Cadillac wanted to up the ante of the CTS’ performance with the new twin-turbo V6. “We knew we needed one that would deliver this kind of thrilling, exciting performance, so we started developing the twin-turbo V6 to fill that roll,” Tener said.
For 2014, the all-wheel drive XTS Vsport model will only be sold in the highest Premium and Platinum trims. In addition to the new twin-turbo V6 engine, which is mated to a six-speed automatic, the Vsport model will look different than the base XTS. Autoweek writes, “Exterior goodies include upgraded 20-inch wheels, a unique grille and Vsport badging all while allowing the buyer to customize their XTS to their taste.”
Cadillac says in a statement that the 2014 XTS Vsport will be available in August. Car and Driver reports that the Vsport model will start at $63,020, including delivery fees. The base 2014 XTS will have a starting price of $45,525, including destination.

Mazda Unveils Redesigned 2014 Mazda3

(Mazda Motor of America)

Mazda officially introduced the all-new 2014 Mazda3 hatchback at a press event in New York today. The automaker says in a press release that the 2014 Mazda3 is completely redesigned, sharing almost nothing besides its name with the 2013 model.
“With more than 3.5 million vehicles sold globally, the Mazda3 is the brand’s best-selling and most recognizable nameplate, and its redesign for 2014 shows just how much attention to detail and care we put into this important vehicle,” says Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North America Operations.
2014 Mazda3 Interior
(Mazda Motor of America)
Compared with the outgoing Mazda3, the new hatchback has a longer wheelbase, but it’s also slightly shorter, lower and wider. Mazda says that the result is an interior that offers more shoulder room in both rows, as well as comparable headroom to the car it replaces. An all-new Active Driving Display also debuts in the 2014 Mazda3, which displays information like navigation directions and speed on a clear pop-up panel. Mazda says that its Active Driving Display keeps vehicle information within the driver’s line of sight, and that the panel folds into a hidden position when the car is turned off.
For 2014, the Mazda3 will continue to offer the Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, as well as the Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s currently available in the 2014 Mazda CX-5 and Mazda6. Mazda hasn’t provided fuel economy estimates for the redesigned Mazda3 yet, but the 2.0- and 2.5-liter engines will produce 155 and 184 horsepower, respectively. A six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission will be available.

(Mazda Motor of America)
The redesigned Mazda3 will have a new infotainment system, which Mazda says will come with Bluetooth, a USB port and an auxiliary input jack. The new system will also respond to voice commands and read emails and text messages through the speakers, as well as Twitter and Facebook updates. A Bose surround-sound stereo system and a navigation system will be optional.
The Mazda3 will also offer a number of new safety technologies for 2014, which Mazda calls i-Activsense features. These include automatic high beam control, which can automatically adjust your headlights for oncoming traffic and radar-based cruise control, which automatically adjusts the car’s speed based on the distance and speed of the car in front of it. Blind spot monitoring and lane departure and forward collision warning systems are also offered as i-Activsense features. Mazda’s Smart City Brake Support system will also be offered, which can automatically apply the brakes or increase breaking power at speeds less than 19 mph if an obstacle is detected.

(Mazda Motor of America)
The 2013 Mazda3 is currently our top-ranked affordable small car, so will Mazda’s updates make it an even stronger contender? We’ll see how the redesigned Mazda3 stacks up to the competition when it goes on sale this fall.

2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Expected to Get 47 Combined MPG

(American Honda Motor Co., Inc.)
Honda released initial fuel economy estimates for its all-new 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Wednesday. The EPA hasn’t announced official ratings yet, but Honda says it expects the Accord Hybrid to get 49/45/47 mpg city/highway/combined.
The Accord Hybrid’s fuel economy is better than the 2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid’s ratings (43/39/41 mpg city/highway/combined), as well as the fuel economy of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and 2013 Kia Optima Hybrid, which both get 36/40/38 mpg. The 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid (47/47/47 mpg) gets worse city fuel economy, but does better on the highway, though its combined rating is the same. The 2013 Toyota Prius gets a higher 51/48/50 mpg rating.
The 2014 Accord Hybrid is expected to go on sale this October. Pricing in the U.S. has not been released yet, but Bloomberg reports that Honda priced the Accord Hybrid 20 percent higher in Japan than the Toyota Camry Hybrid because of its better fuel economy. This has created speculation on whether or not the same will be true for the Accord Hybrid in the U.S. Alec Gutierrez, senior market analyst for Kelley Blue Book, told Bloomberg that the pricing tactic is smart since consumers are looking for the best balance of cabin size and fuel economy. Bloomberg says that 2013 Honda Accord sales have already increased 23 percent so far this year, and Toyota Camry’s sales have fallen by 5.5 percent.

Its main rivals, the 2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid and 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid, start at $26,140 and $27,200, respectively.

Ford Upgrading MyFord Touch

Responding to customer complaints and sliding ratings in quality surveys, Ford is making changes to its MyFord Touch infotainment system, including adding buttons.
Infotainment controls in the 2014 Ford Fiesta (Ford Motor Company)
Autoblog writes, "The 2013 F-150 with MyFord Touch gives us a glimpse of what the new layout with buttons and knobs might look like, as Ford says a similar balance of touch screen capability and buttons/knobs are what's being planned for future models."
In a press release, Ford says that, combined, its SYNC and MyFord Touch systems are sold on 79 percent of 2013 Ford vehicles. It says that's double the rate of sales of infotainment systems on Honda and Toyota vehicles.
While sales of vehicles equipped with SYNC or MyFord Touch are strong, so are consumer reactions to the systems, which use voice commands, touch screens and capacitive controls. Automotive News reports that MyFord Touch "has hurt Ford's ratings in several quality surveys. Customers have complained the system is bulky, distracting and overly complicated to use. Ford has issued several software upgrades." Automotive News adds that in 2010, Ford was the highest-ranked non-luxury brand in J.D. Power & Associates’ annual Initial Quality Study. After MyFord Touch was launched, Ford dropped from a fifth-place overall ranking in 2010 to 23rd in 2011 and 32nd in 2012.

GM Recalling 193,652 Midsize SUVs

2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer (General Motors)
General Motors is recalling 193,652 SUVs over concern that a short circuit could cause a fire. The recall affects 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Saab 9-7X and Isuzu Ascender SUVs, as well as 2006 Trailblazer EXT and Envoy XL models.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that fluid may leak into the driver’s door module. Corrosion may occur as a result, which could cause a short circuit and make the power window switches function improperly or not at all. NHTSA says a short circuit could also cause components to overheat, increasing the risk of a fire.
NHTSA says that a fire could start while the vehicle is not in use, and is advising owners to park outside until the problem has been fixed.
The Detroit News reports that at least 28 fires have been reported, some of which occurred when the SUVs were unattended. The publication says this is the second recall related to this issue since last August, and about 440,000 SUVs have been recalled in total.
To fix the problem, dealers will test the driver’s door module to see if it is functioning properly. A protective coating will be applied to the modules that are working properly. Modules that are malfunctioning will be replaced.
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified of the recall, which will begin July 24. For more information, contact NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.

GM Prices the Redesigned 2014 Cadillac CTS Sedan at $46,025

(General Motors)
General Motors has announced that the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan will start at $46,025 after a $925 destination charge, which is $6,035 more than the 2013 model. GM says in a press release that the 2014 CTS will offer 20 new standard features, as well as “more interior space, power and technology” when it hits dealerships this fall.
The 2014 CTS will be offered with the choice of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a 3.6-liter V6, as well as rear- or all-wheel drive. The automaker says that the V6 generates 321 horsepower. The turbo-four equipped CTS sedan will produce 272 horsepower and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, which makes it 1.5 seconds quicker than the 2013 CTS.

A more powerful CTS Vsport model will also debut with a starting price of $59,995 after a $925 destination fee. The CTS Vsport will come with a new 420-horsepower, twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6, which is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Edmunds reports that the CTS Vsport is not a replacement for the 2013 CTS-V sedan, which starts at $65,410 after an $895 destination fee and a $1,300 gas-guzzler tax. Cadillac Spokesman David Caldwell told Edmunds that the CTS Vsport will not carry a gas-guzzler tax.
Inside, the redesigned 2014 CTS sedan will come standard with Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system and an eight-inch touch-screen display, as well as an 11-speaker Bose stereo system with HD Radio. “It will also be the first Cadillac with advanced park assist, which takes control of the steering wheel when parallel parking,” writes Autoweek. “Also notable is a new 20-way adjustable driver’s seat with haptic feedback for lane-departure warning, also found on the ATS.”
2014 Cadillac CTS sedan
(General Motors)
The current CTS sedan ranks highly among upscale midsize cars, where it competes with models like the BMW 3-Series, Infiniti G37 and its sibling, the Cadillac ATS. However, some auto writers say that the new CTS’ larger size makes it more fit to compete with luxury large cars like the BMW 5-Series. Jalopnik writes, “Instead of being somewhere between a 3 and 5 series BMW, the CTS has gone full 5 series.” The 2014 Cadillac CTS will start at about $3,800 more than the Audi A6, but it also undercuts the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and 5-Series by roughly $5,900 and $1,800, respectively. Unlike the sedan, the CTS Coupe and CTS Sport Wagon will carry over unchanged for the 2014 model year.

Chrysler Recalling 430,000 Jeeps

Chrysler Group announced two separate Jeep recalls affecting three models yesterday. These recalls are not related to our story from earlier in the week about Chrysler’s refusal to comply with a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall request for 2.7 million 1993-2004 Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Liberty models.

The first recall affects 254,396 Compass and Patriot models from the 2010-2012 model years built between May 6, 2008 and July 20, 2012. According to the NHTSA, there may be a glitch with the vehicles’ computers, wherein the side curtain air bags or seatbelt pre-tensioners may not work, increasing risk of injury in an accident.
Chrysler will correct the software to fix the computer glitch. The number for this recall is 101.
The second recall affects 180,131 2012-2013 Wrangler models with the 3.6-liter V6 engine and an automatic transmission built between Jan. 23, 2011 and Feb. 23, 2013. Due to unintentional contact between the power steering line and transmission oil cooler, a hole may form that could result in the loss of transmission fluid. This could lead to a loss of transmission function, increasing the risk of an accident.

To fix the problem, Chrysler will replace the power steering return tube assembly. The recall campaign number is N28.
In two separate media releases, Chrysler says that there have been no accidents or injuries reported related to either the Patriot/Compass or the Wrangler recall. Both recalls are expected to begin in July. Owners of affected vehicles may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.

Will the Redesigned 2014 Toyota Corolla Bring Happiness?

2014 Toyota Corolla/Photo Courtesy of Toyota
This evening, Toyota revealed the all-new 2014 Toyota Corolla. Leading up to tonight, Toyota has been using social media to show off different parts of the redesigned Corolla.
In the beginning, Tatsuo Hasegawa, the Corolla’s first chief engineer, said the mission was “to develop a car that brings happiness and well-being to people around the world.” Now, according to a Toyota press release, the Corolla has been around for 47 years with almost 40 million sales in more than 150 countries.
Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst for Edmunds.com, says, "You can't underestimate Corolla's importance to Toyota's success. Its legions of buyers continue to grow Toyota awareness and Corolla is a strong gateway into the brand. Toyota has had a successful formula with the Corolla, but the vehicle does need some improvement in order to capture the more discerning compact car buyer in this competitive environment."
Data from Edmunds show that the Corolla, thus far, is the best-selling compact car in the United States. Edmunds chalks this up to dedicated customers. Of all trade-ins for a new Corolla in May, 35 percent were older Corollas.

The 2014 Toyota Corolla has four trims: L, LE, S and a new LE Eco trim. According to Toyota, all Corollas will have LED headlights, a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, full power accessories, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, cloth upholstery and eight air bags. Other features on higher grades or optional packages include a smart key with push-button start, SofTex seating materials, heated front seats, a navigation system and Entune apps. Features available on specific trims and prices will be released closer to when the Corolla goes on sale in the fall.

Toyota expects the Corolla’s highway fuel economy for the LE Eco, a new trim that focuses on fuel economy, to surpass 40 mpg. It comes with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with Valvematic technology. Toyota notes that this will be the first vehicle in North America to have this technology, which will improve fuel economy and increase the engine’s productivity to 140 horsepower. Low-rolling resistance tires or available aerodynamic alloy wheels are also available on the LE Eco. For car shoppers who want to cut down on maintenance cost, low-rolling resistance tires have been proven not to last as long as standard tires.
Another 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine is standard on the L, LE and S trims and produces up to 132 horsepower, according to the Toyota press release. The L model comes with an automatic transmission or a manual transmission. The manual transmission is available in the S. The CVT mentioned in the LE Eco grade is available in the LE and S trims.
The CVT can be changed from Normal mode to ECO and SPORT modes in the LE Eco and S trims. The ECO mode in the LE Eco will control the air conditioning along with some driving changes to get better fuel economy. Toyota says that the SPORT mode in the S trim is supposed to “deliver a more dynamic driving experience with software tuning that alters shift points, creating transmission behavior during acceleration that enhances the sporty character of the S-grade.” Paddle shifters on the steering wheel are standard on the S trim with the CVT. The shifter in the S can also be used to manually shift in the M mode.
The 2013 Toyota Corolla is ranked near the bottom of our affordable small car rankings going up against vehicles like the Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra and Subaru Impreza. After reviewers test it, we'll see if it makes them happy enough to give it better reviews.

2014 Corvette Stings with 460 Horsepower

Lead-footed drivers have yet another car to add to their wish list. On Tuesday, Chevrolet announced the official power figures for the 2014 Corvette Stingray in a press release. The Corvette’s 6.2-liter V8, called LT1, produces 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. An optional performance exhaust system raises output to 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.
By comparison, the 2013 Corvette produces 430 horsepower (436 with the optional performance exhaust) and 424 pound-feet of torque (428 with performance exhaust). Some publications, including Autoblog, are impressed with the LT1’s output, noting that the new engine is down only five pound-feet of torque from the 2013 Z06 model, which produces 505 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.
The new Stingray should hit 60 mph in less than four seconds, according to Chevrolet. Chevy also predicts that highway fuel economy will be rated at 26 mpg or more, though that has yet to be validated by the EPA. For reference, the 2013 Corvette is EPA-rated at 16/26 mpg city/highway, while the Z06 model is rated at 15/24 mpg.

Chevrolet partially attributes its fuel economy prediction to the use of cylinder deactivation, which General Motors calls Active Fuel Management by GM. In more easy-going driving situations such as cruising at a steady speed on the highway, half of the engine’s cylinders shut down, requiring less fuel to operate the car. While no publications have yet had any time behind the wheel of the new Corvette, Car and Driver expects the system to operate smoothly, based on a recent test drive of the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray has a starting price of $51,995. Due to its performance capabilities and price compared with other luxury sports cars, the Corvette is often billed by auto journalists as one of the best-value sports cars available. The redesigned 2013 Porsche Boxster starts at $50,400 and has a 265-horsepower flat-six engine. The 2014 Audi R8 starts at $114,900 and features a 430-horsepower V8. The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 starts at $54,800 and has a supercharged V8 with 662 horsepower. While the prices and power figures for each of these cars vary widely, reviewers say that each of these models excel in some performance arenas more than others, so deciding which one is best based only on price and output is difficult to do.
Chevrolet says the Corvette Stingray coupe goes on sale this fall, and the convertible will hit dealerships by the end of the year.

Volkswagen Will Alter Diesel Models to Avoid Misfueling

Volkswagen is retrofitting about 260,000 diesel models in North America with a special fuel filler neck cap to help keep owners of diesel-powered models from accidently refueling with regular gasoline. The cap will shrink the diameter of the fuel neck and thus prevent gasoline pump nozzles from fitting into the fuel neck of a diesel vehicle. Automotive News (subscription required) learned of the service action through a memo that was sent to Volkswagen dealers.
The service action applies to TDI-equipped Jetta, Golf and Jetta SportWagen models from the 2009 to 2012 model years. About 210,000 models in the United States and 52,000 models in Canada are affected. Affected owners will receive notification of the service action starting May 28.
The dealer memo states that as diesel vehicles have become more prevalent, there have been more incidences of accidental refueling with gasoline, according to Automotive News. The publication says that all 2013 and newer diesel VW models are already equipped with the new diesel-only fuel neck cap. The retrofit for the affected models will be performed free of charge.
The Chicago Tribune says, “Gasoline in a diesel engine will stall the car and cause all sorts of problems, the biggest of which is that it voids the warranty.”
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation and then an engineering analysis into Volkswagen’s diesel models for failed fuel pumps, according to Kicking Tires. The publication says that many of the complaints NHTSA received involved gasoline in the fuel tank of a diesel vehicle.
Kicking Tires says that more information can be obtained by calling Volkswagen at (800) 822-8987.

Wheels Could Fall off Some Cadillac SRX SUVs

“Drive it until the wheels fall off.” This is probably not what General Motors had in mind for its Cadillac SRX SUV. The automaker is recalling almost 19,000 SRX crossovers in the U.S. from the 2013 model year with 18-inch wheels because their wheel nuts might not be tightened sufficiently, which could cause the wheels to fall off, the Associated Press reports.
Reuters writes, “GM said on Wednesday it knows of no crashes or injuries due to the issue and that no wheels have separated from the sport utility vehicles built on car-based platforms.”
According to The Detroit News, drivers might hear “creaking, rattling or grinding noises from the wheels or steering vibrations” due to the loose wheel nut problem. The automaker will contact owners of affected 2013 Cadillac SRX crossovers starting early next month, and dealers will rotate the vehicle’s tires and properly install and tighten the lug nuts free of charge.

It's on a Boat: The Refreshed 2014 Hyundai Equus

Sixty-one heavily refreshed 2014 Hyundai Equus sedans are currently en-route to the U.S., but Hyundai Motor America President and CEO John Krafcik says that they’re not exactly where he’d like them to be. All of them are on the Morning Spruce, a cargo ship that's stuck near the Kamchatka Peninsula on the far east coast of Russia with a blown motor.
The Equus makes up a small percentage of Hyundai vehicle sales, but there are other models on the ship, which puts a strain on Hyundai’s already-tight supply. “We’re just tapped out from a local production standpoint; we make about 60 to 70 percent of the cars that we sell in the U.S.,” says Krafcik. U.S.-built Hyundai models include the Elantra, Santa Fe and Sonata, and Krafcik says that its Alabama plant is the third-highest-producing plant in the country, churning out more cars than competing General Motors, Ford and Chrysler plants. “We cannot get a single car, which is very frustrating when a boat loses an engine off of the Kamchatka Peninsula.”

While Hyundai is figuring out a way to get its stranded vehicles to the U.S., the automaker brought a pre-production version of the 2014 Equus to our office to showcase some of its capabilities. Krafcik says that the new Equus has a number of updates compared with the 2013 model, including an interior that’s almost completely redesigned. New features include motorized self-closing doors, a 9.2-inch center screen for the infotainment system, a TFT display for vehicle gauges and two rear-seat 9.2-inch displays. “I think when you add all the screen dimensions up we may have more screen than any car in the industry,” says Krafcik. “I’m almost positive of this.”
From a performance standpoint, the Equus’ suspension has also been re-tuned in an effort to provide a ride that’s both sportier and more comfortable. A snow mode for winter driving is also new, along with a smart cruise control system that can bring the Equus to a full stop if necessary. Krafcik says, “You’re going to see that technology trickling down to a lot of our cars in the near future.”

When asked if the Equus’ updates will boost consumer perception of car buyers coming over from luxury brands, Krafcik says that the Equus buyer likes “the idea that it’s not a Mercedes or BMW, but the car still has to pass muster from a feature and content standpoint for them to consider it.” He tells us that Equus buyers are quite similar to the original Lexus buyers from the late 1980’s, and that aside from the Hyundai Genesis, the Lexus LS is the number one trade-in vehicle of Equus buyers (followed closely by the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and S-Class).
Many automotive journalists suspect that a Hyundai badge isn’t prestigious enough to attract a luxury buyer. Hyundai has sold 1,075 Equus models so far this year. In comparison, Mercedes has sold 4,180 S-Class sedans, while BMW has sold 3,209 7-Series models. We asked Krafcik about the advantages of selling a super luxury car from a mainstream brand. “When we thought really deeply and in a really big way about it, the thought was, this is better for the company if our very best cars have Hyundai logos on them, and think of the confidence that inspires in the owner of every Hyundai.”

Hyundai’s CEO says that it’s a challenging time for the automaker. “If the market’s going to grow 10 percent or 15 percent this year, we can’t. We’ll be lucky to grow 5 percent if we can eek out a little bit more production here and there.” Tight supply often means higher prices, but Krafcik says that the automaker has coped with the demand with lower incentives. “It’s not our style to raise prices. It is our style to have a very low incentive level. In fact, for the last couple of years, we’ve had the lowest incentive level in the industry by quite a margin.”
As a result, Krafcik says that Hyundai vehicles now have the second or third highest residual values in the industry. “We talk a lot about transitioning Hyundai from a value brand to a valuable brand. A brand you want because you love the design; yes it has a great value proposition and the car’s also going to have a high asset value in future years.” Hyundai didn’t make Kelley Blue Book’s 2013 list of Best Resale Value Awards. However, TrueCar and ALG ranked Hyundai as having the second-highest residual value across mainstream automotive brands, right behind Honda. Additionally, ALG reports that the Hyundai Azera, Elantra and Santa Fe Sport each offer the best resale value within their respective segments.

Automobile Magazine Releases 2013 All-Stars

Automobile Magazine released its 2013 All-Stars list today. The magazine calls the 11 cars on the list "the Best Cars in America."
According to Automobile, to be eligible for the All-Star honor, a car, SUV or truck must be on sale in America when the magazine does its fall testing. The current Automobile Car of the Year, the Tesla Model S, is ineligible for the All-Star list. Automobile also says it usually excludes exotic cars from the awards, which for 2013 were voted on by 16 Automobile Magazine editors and contributors. Forty-four models from 25 brands were tested for the All-Star list. The magazine didn't elaborate on what the criteria for judging is, beyond writing, "We bring no score sheets, just open minds and a desire to recognize the best and most significant vehicles."
Of the 11 All-Stars, four are sports cars. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Porsche Boxster, Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S all made the list, with Automobile writing, "This is the golden age of sports cars." The winners, it adds, "are part of a wave of high-performance sportsters that are coming from automakers in every country, as high performance has become an accepted approach to marketing and selling significant numbers of street cars."
For the more practical-minded, the Honda Accord, Ford Focus, Mazda CX-5 and Ram 1500 also made the All-Star list. The Audi A7 and BMW 3-Series make up the luxury names on the list, and the Volkswagen GTI balances utility with better performance than the typical small car.
Any time automotive awards are released, debate follows. However, many of the cars on this year's All-Star list are unlikely to generate much controversy. The Ford Focus, BMW 3-Series, Porsche Boxster, Volkswagen GTI, Honda Accord, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ are not only on Automobile Magazine's All-Star list, but were also named to Car and Driver's 2013 10Best list.
Our rankings take the awards a car wins into account. In addition to the Automobile All-Star list, the awards that impact our scoring include the North American Car and Truck of the Year, Automobile's Car of the Year, Car and Driver's 10Best, Motor Trend Car of the Year, Edmund's Editors Most Wanted, Consumer Guide Best Buy and Consumer Reports Recommendation. When a car wins one of these awards or is recommended by a publication, it gets a bump in its Critic's Rating score. Read more about how U.S. News ranks cars.
