Refreshed 2014 Buick LaCrosse Revealed

Buick unveiled a refreshed version of the 2014 LaCrosse Monday at the New York International Auto Show. This is the first significant refresh of the affordable large car since it was last fully redesigned for the 2010 model year.
In a press release, Buick details the changes to the LaCrosse, which include updated interior and exterior styling and new interior technology features. Buick says the refreshed model’s cabin features new seats and a redesigned instrument panel and console, which house an updated version of Buick’s IntelliLink infotainment system.
Kicking Tires notes that the new center stack “looks far easier to use at a glance,” with less buttons to confuse users. There are just seven buttons for the radio now, whereas the previous version of IntelliLink had 17 buttons.
There are also newly-available safety features on the 2014 LaCrosse, including lane departure warning, forward collision alert and rear cross traffic alert. The new model will also be available with GM’s Safety Alert Seat, which initially debuted on the Cadillac XTS. The Safety Alert Seat vibrates to alert the driver when an obstruction behind the car is detected when backing up, or when the car is drifting out of its lane.
On the outside, the LaCrosse gets new head- and taillights that feature LED elements, as well as a revamped front grille. Autoblog says the changes “help give the car a fresh, new look.”
The LaCrosse’s mechanical bits remain largely unchanged. Front wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional. Two engines are available: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with eAssist, which is GM’s mild hybrid powertrain, or a 3.6-liter V6. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
The Buick LaCrosse competes with other affordable large cars such as the Ford Taurus, Chrysler 300, Hyundai Azera and Toyota Avalon, all of which have been recently updated. The LaCrosse is currently our top-ranked car in this category.
Buick hasn’t yet announced pricing for the 2014 LaCrosse, but the 2013 model starts at $31,660.

Affordable Small Cars Attract Young Buyers

Edmunds and R.L. Polk released a study on Wednesday that found the percentage of 18-34 year olds purchasing South Korean and U.S. brand cars has gone up since 2008.
According to USA Today, “Detroit automakers have reached out to young buyers as never before with a raft of appealing small cars that they would have rejected as unprofitable in the past. Chrysler Group has the fun Fiat 500, General Motors has models like the small Chevrolet Sonic and smaller Spark and Ford has sponsored TV’s American Idol for its small car lineup, such as the Fiesta and Focus.”
In 2008, European and Japanese car brands attracted younger buyers, but Edmunds.com Sr. Analyst Jessica Caldwell says, “U.S. automakers have burst onto the scene in recent years with small, fuel-efficient and affordable cars that really appeal to a young set of buyers.” She goes on to say, “But while Detroit might be chiseling away at the Japanese grip on Gen X and Gen Y, South Korean brands are taking big hacks.”
Since the affordable small car field has grown so much over the last few years, buyers looking in this segment have more vehicles to choose from. In our rankings, the 2013 Ford Fiesta, 2013 Honda Fit and 2013 Mazda3 are all tied for the top spot. Those whose main focus is buying a car with the lowest starting price should look at the 2013 Nissan Versa and 2013 Chevrolet Spark. Want the safest affordable small car? The 2013 Subaru Impreza currently has the highest safety score for the class. However, there are quite a few others that still get a near-perfect score.

VW Golf Wins European Car of the Year, New Golf Models to Come to U.S.

The Volkswagen Golf has been named European Car of The Year at the Geneva Motor Show.
The Detroit Bureau reports, "The seventh-generation VW hatchback soundly beat out its closest competitors in balloting by 58 automotive journalists from 22 European countries. The Golf scored 414 votes compared to 202 for the Subaru BRZ sports car, which took second place, and the 189 votes tallied by the Volvo V40."
Fox News adds, "But don't head to your VW showroom just yet. The all-new Golf isn't expected to replace the current version in the U.S. until next year."
When the new Golf comes stateside, it should have three variations for buyers to choose from: the Golf GTI, a high-performance version; the Golf GTD, a high-performance diesel model that VW is considering bringing to the U.S.; and the Golf Wagon. The Los Angeles Times writes, "In the U.S., this car [the Golf Wagon] effectively replaces the Jetta SportWagen, which was actually built on a Golf platform. VW hasn't decided what to actually call this wagon when it goes on sale in the U.S. at the end of 2014. Regardless of what it's called, the Golf wagon will come with either a gas or diesel engine."
According to The Wall Street Journal, "VW said the new wagon is about 232 pounds lighter than its predecessor. From outside, the new car’s rear end looks taller and less squished-down compared with the previous version. Inside, the reworked shape provides 20% more cargo space when the rear seats are up and 9% more with the rear seats folded. In the real world that means drivers will not have to chose so often between carrying their children or their baggage."
